FAQ
1. What can I expect at a Sensory Friendly Dance performance?
This performance is open to the entire Sacramento community and will employ sensory friendly design in the theater to help neurodiverse populations feel comfortable, safe, and welcomed. This means we will keep the theater lights on, lower sound levels, invite audiences to bring their own noise-cancelling headphones and fidget toys, as well as provide some upon request, and create a Quiet Zone where audiences can relax, and play! We relax traditional theater rules and allow audiences to talk, sing, dance, play and enter and exit the theater as needed. We will have Behavior Therapists and trained volunteers on hand to help everyone feel welcomed and comfortable. We provide a free Social Story to help audiences prepare for the event!
2. How long is the performance?
Sensory Friendly Dance performances are one hour. Peter and the Wolf is from 2-3pm on Saturday August 21st, and doors to the theater open at 1:30pm. We begin our performance at 2pm with an introduction to the ballet and the characters in the show. The dance performance is then about 30 minutes long. After the performance we will have a 15 minute Q&A with our artists.
3. Who is this performance for? Is it only open to individuals with autism?
All of Sensory Friendly Dance's events are open to our entire community. It is our goal to create truly inclusive live dance experiences by inviting everyone into a welcoming theater space. Peter and the Wolf is a family friendly ballet appropriate for all ages and abilities. While we employ some sensory friendly design elements into our performance experience, our events are made for the neurotypical and neurodiverse to enjoy side by side.
4. What are the COVID safety protocols at the performance?
Sensory Friendly Dance's production of Peter and the Wolf is taking place at the Sutter Theatre inside The Sofia, home of B Street Theatre at 2700 Capitol Ave, Sacramento, CA. The theatre has their own COVID safety requirements in place that we will be adhering to. All adults attending our performance must show either proof of vaccination, or a negative COVID test up to 72 hours prior to the performance. Children ages 2-12 years old who are ineligible for the vaccine must wear a mask to attend the performance unless excused for medical reasons. Currently, Sacramento is requiring all individuals to wear a mask indoors so all attendees must wear a mask unless of a medical condition. We are aware that individuals with autism or sensory sensitivities may not be able to tolerate a mask and be medically excused from wearing a mask.
5. I am unable to attend the performance, will you have a digital version?
YES! We are excited to have the talented Natalie Manning creating a special filmed version of Peter and the Wolf that will be available to purchase on our website the first in September 2021, after our live performance. If you are unable to join us for our live event, be sure to catch our film!
